Over 14 million visitors have discovered why "You never forget Howe!" - the largest cave open to the public in the Northeast. The great limestone cave, carved by water over the course of an estimated 10 million years, is a land where time stands still.
This year marks the 161st anniversary of the discovery of Howe Caverns by local farmer, Lester Howe. Today's visitors begin their journey by elevator, traveling 156-feet below the earth's surface, where the temperature is an ever-constant 52° F. Highlights include The Winding Way, with its curves and corners; Titan's Temple, with ceilings 55 feet high; and the world-famous boat ride on the underground Lake of Venus.
Howe Caverns is located off Exit 22 of I-88, about 45 minutes from Albany. Howe Caverns is open all year from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from July 1 through Labor Day. Howe Caverns is closed only Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. For additional information, call 518-296-8900 or visit the Web site at www.howecaverns.com.
